Scarification: Pour boiling water over seed , let stand in water for 12 hours; or small numbers of seed , file or sand through the outer seedcoat, let stand in water for 12 hours.

Stratification: Stored seed, warm stratify for 60 to 90 days (60F), cold stratify for 150 days.

Germination: sow seed 1/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.

Other: fall sowing in mulched beds is prefered to artificial stratification. if boiling water treatment does not allow seed to imbibe, sulfuric acid treatment is required with cold strat. for 150 days.

The leaves are 3-8 cm long rounded ovals, green with a waxy glaucous sheen. The autumn colour can be strikingly varied, from peach and yellow to scarlet. The flowers are numerous, produced in large inflorescences 15–30 cm (5.9–12 in) long; each flower 5-10 mm diameter, with five pale yellow petals
