In a Nutshell:
* Crataegus aestivalis , known as the Eastern May Hawthorn , is a shrub or small tree of the southeastern US that grows in low-lying or wet areas from eastern Alabama to central Florida and Virginia . It is one of several species of hawthorn with fruits known as " mayhaws ", which are harvested for use in making mayhaw jelly, a delicacy treasured by those few lucky enough to know it.
* Because it tolerates a wide variety of sites, this species can be used to stabilize banks, for shelterbelts, and to give protection from wind and water erosion.
* A very easily grown plant, it prefers a well-drained moisture retentive loamy soil but is not at all fussy. Once established, it succeeds in excessively moist soils and also tolerates drought.
* It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
* The fruit is eaten raw or cooked. Juicy and acid with a pleasant flavour. It is up to 2cm in diameter. The fruit is frequently used and much prized in parts of southern N. America where it is often gathered in quantity from the wild. Its acid flavour makes it a favourite for preserves and jellies. more...
