In a Nutshell:
* The Virginia strawberry, wild strawberry, or common strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) is one of two species of strawberry that were hybridized to create the modern domesticated garden strawberry.
* Its natural range is confined to North America, in the United States (including Alaska) and Canada, although a popular variety called "Little Scarlet" is grown only in Great Britain, having been imported from the United States in the early 1900s.
* Prefers a fertile, well-drained, moisture retentive soil in a sunny position. Tolerates semi-shade though fruit production will be reduced when plants grow in such a position.
* Strawberries are perennials, the plants will come back each year more...
* The fruit is weet and succulent. Small but delicious, up to 20mm in diameter. The dried leaves are a very pleasant tea substitute. Rich in vitamin C.

Sow seed early spring in a greenhouse. The seed can take 4 weeks or more to germinate. The seedlings are very small and slow-growing at first, but then grow rapidly.
* The whole plant is antiseptic, astringent, emmenagogue, galactogogue and odontalgic. It has been used to regulate the menstrual cycle.
* Teeth.

The fruits are used as a tooth cleaner. They are held in the mouth, or rubbed over the teeth, to remove tartar. more...
* All strawberries have a base haploid count of 7 chromosomes. Fragaria virginiana is octoploid, having eight sets of these chromosomes for a total of 56. These eight genomes pair as four distinct sets, of two different types, with little or no pairing between sets. more...
