In a Nutshell:
* Ilex opaca is a medium-sized broadleaved evergreen tree growing to 10-20 m tall, exceptionally up to 30 m tall, with a trunk diameter typically up to 50 cm, exceptionally 120 cm.
* The Ilex opaca species typically grows as an understory tree in forests. It is rare in the north of its range in southern Connecticut, southeastern New York, and isolated areas of Cape Cod, and always small there. It is abundant further south on the southern coast and in the Gulf states, reaching its greatest size on the bottomlands of southern Arkansas and eastern Texas.
* Ilex opaca is often cultivated by plant nurseries for use as a broadleaf evergreen ornamental plant, planted as a shrub or slower growing ornamental tree.
* Yellow-green spiny leaves, red fruit almost 1/2" wide, lasting into winter, of pyramidal habit in youth, later more open, with horizontal branches, sometimes contorted, must have male and female to get fruit, parent of many varied cultivars, native to eastern U.S.
* A strikingly white wood, it is valued for use in veneers and inlay. It weighs 36lb per cubic foot. Too small for commercial exploitation, but it is valued for use in cabinet making and the interior finishes of houses, it is also used for making small items such as tool handles. The wood can also be stained to imitate ebony. more...
