* In El Salvador, it occurs with Pinus maximinoi on Cerro el Pital in La Palma town and above, at 900-1500 m elevation. While you're there, from 1500-2500 m the forest is mixed with Pinus tecunumanii and Pinus pseudostrobus var. apulcensis, and above 2000 m it is easy to find pure and mixed forests of Pinus ayacahuite var. ayacahuite (Fernando Tobar email 2008.11.12). more...
* It is an important source of commercial timber in Honduras and Central America. P. oocarpa was introduced for commercial production of wood for the paper industry: in Ecuador, Kenya, Zambia, Colombia, Bolivia, Queensland (Australia), Brazil and South Africa. Due to the amount of resin within the tree, many Central Americans will use small shavings to start cooking fires. more...
