Growing Info, follow in order:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days , or until radicle emergence.
Germination: sow 1" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
Other: fall sowing in mulched beds is prefered to artificial stratification.
In a Nutshell:
* This is a very popular shade and street tree which is conical when young and ultimately forms a rounded canopy with a tall unbranched trunk. The leaves are deeply lobed, pointy 3-6" and turn winey red, russet-red or bronzy in fall. The acorns are 1/2", the tree grows quickly, needs acid soil, is subject to chlorosis and likes full sun. * The pin oak is in the red oak subgenus: pointed lobes.The sinuses are very deeply cut and u-shaped.The amount of sinus area is approximately equivalent to the amount of actual leaf area.The upper branches point upwards, the middle branches are perpendicular to trunk, and the lower branches angle down.
* It is naturally a wetland tree, and develops a shallow, fibrous root system, unlike many oaks , which have a strong, deep taproot when young. It is confined to acidic soils, and does not tolerate limestone , and grows at low altitudes from sea level up to 350 m. The specific name palustris means "of swamps ". more...
