[ edit ] Description It is a deciduous tree reaching 15–25 m tall, with a trunk up to 1 m diameter, with finely fissured, often somewhat corky bark . The shoots are brown, with dark brown winter buds . The leaves are in opposite pairs, 5–16 cm long (including the 3–9 cm petiole) and 5–10 cm broad, with five blunt, rounded lobes with a smooth margin. Usually monoecious , the flowers are produced in spring at the same time as the leaves open, yellow-green, in erect clusters 4–6 cm across, and are insect pollinated. The fruit is a samara with two winged achenes aligned at 180°, each achene is 8–10 mm wide, flat, with a 2 cm wing. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] There are two varieties , not accepted as distinct by all authorities: [ 3 ] [ 5 ] Acer campestre var. campestre . Fruit downy. Acer campestre var. leiocarpum (Opiz) Wallr. (syn. Physical Characteristics  Acer campestre is a deciduous Tree growing to 15 m (49ft 3in) at a fast rate. It is hardy to zone 4 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from Sep to October. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Insects.It is noted for attracting wildlife. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. and can grow in very alkaline soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires moist soil.The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.
