The species is named after the Tatar peoples of southern Russia; the tree's name is similarly commonly also spelled "Tartar" in English. [ 1 ] [ 2 ]

Physical Characteristics  Acer tataricum is a deciduous Tree growing to 9 m (29ft 6in). It is hardy to zone 4. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen in September. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils..It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires moist soil.
