In a Nutshell:
* The papaya is a small, sparsely branched tree, usually with a single stem growing from 5 to 10 m (16 to 33 ft) tall, with spirally arranged leaves confined to the top of the trunk.
* The leaves are large, 50–70 cm (20–28 in) in diameter, deeply palmatelylobed, with seven lobes. All parts of the plant contain latex in articulated laticifers.
* Originally from southern Mexico (particularly Chiapas and Veracruz), Central America, and northern South America, the papaya is now cultivated in most tropical countries. In cultivation, it grows rapidly, fruiting within three years.
* In 2014, global production of papayas was 12.7 million tonnes, led by India with 44% of the world total.
* The ripe fruit of the papaya is usually eaten raw, without skin or seeds. The unripe green fruit can be eaten cooked, usually in curries, salads, and stews. Green papaya is used in Southeast Asian cooking, both raw and cooked.
* Papaya skin, pulp and seeds contain a variety of phytochemicals, including carotenoids and polyphenols, as well as benzyl isothiocyanates and benzyl glucosinates, with skin and pulp levels that increase during ripening.Papaya seeds also contain the cyanogenic substance prunasin. more...
