It grows on wet sites on the coastal plain at altitudes from sea level up to 50 m, more rarely in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains up to 460 m altitude.

* The common name "Atlantic White Cedar" has been rejected by the American Joint Committee on Horticultural Nomenclature, as it is a cypress, not a cedar. However, it is still the most widely used name for this species.

Physical Characteristics Â Chamaecyparis thyoides is an evergreen Tree growing to 10 m (32ft) by 3 m (9ft) at a slow rate. It is hardy to zone 5. It is in leaf 12-Jan It is in flower from Mar to April, and the seeds ripen from Sep to October. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Wind.It is noted for attracting wildlife. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. and can grow in very acid and very alkaline soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires dry moist or wet soil.The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. It cannot tolerate atmospheric pollution.
