In a Nutshell:
* Embothrium coccineum, commonly known as the Chilean firetree, Chilean firebush, Notro, or Ciruelillo in Spanish, is a small evergreen tree in the flowering plant family Proteaceae. It grows in the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina.
* Chilean firetree grows 4–15 m (13–50 ft) tall and can reach 50 cm (20 in) in diameter.
* It produces clusters of deep red flowers (occasionally pale yellow) and flowering occurs in spring.
* It is grown as an ornamental in Great Britain and the United States.
* "Perhaps no tree cultivated in the open air in the British Isles gives so striking and brilliant a display as this does."
* It is pollinated by both hummingbirds and insects in its natural range.
* Like other members of the family Proteaceae, E. coccineum seedlings produce dense root masses called cluster roots or Proteoid roots that provide access to normally inaccessible forms of various nutrients, especially phosphorus. more...
