It is closely related to Juniperus communis (Common Juniper) and Juniperus conferta (Shore Juniper), the latter sometimes treated as a variety or subspecies of J. rigida.
* An attractive, variable plant, often with a vertical central leader, horizontal side branches, and drooping branchlets, a loose, open habit, sharp, needlelike bright green foliage, native to Japan, Korea, North China
* Succeeds in most soils if they are well drained, preferring a neutral or slightly alkaline soil and succeeding on chalk. Established plants are drought tolerant, succeeding in hot dry positions. A very ornamental plant.

Physical Characteristics  Juniperus rigida is an evergreen Tree growing to 8 m (26ft) by 8 m (26ft) at a slow rate. It is hardy to zone 5. It is in leaf 12-Jan, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Wind.The plant is not self-fertile. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. and can grow in very alkaline soils. It cannot grow in the shade.It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.
