It grows at high altitudes in mountain valleys at altitudes of 1800–4300 m (rarely as low as 1200 m), and is a tree from 30–50 m in height. * "Excellent and beautiful pine for large areas, very graceful" (Dirr), broader at maturity than most pines, with a rounded top, drooping gray-green needles 6-8" long give the tree a soft texture, a timber and ornamental tree in Europe, native to Himalayas .

* China: predominantly at 600-3000 m elevation on the high plateaus of Yunnan (Li 1997), but extending N into Sichuan, where it intergrades with P. tabuliformis, and S into N Burma, where it intergrades with P. kesiya.
